With an area of 3,947 km², the district of Coimbra in the Beira region, has 17 municipalities: Arganil, Cantanhede, Coimbra, Condeixa-a-Nova, Figueira da Foz, Góis, Lousã, Mira, Miranda do Corvo, Montemor-o-Velho, Oliveira do Hospital, Pampilhosa da Serra, Penacova , Penela, Soure, Tábua, Vila Nova de Poiares.
There are many reasons to visit the district.
Extending from the sea to the mountains, there are countless wonderful findings that the region has to offer: magnificent and cool waterfalls, wonderful beaches, splendid castles and palaces, charming villages, walkways, forests and gardens where nature shows all its beauty, imposing monasteries and cathedrals, libraries that exude knowledge and charm...not to mention the cultural, historical and spiritual richness that the region houses within itself.
You can´t miss Coimbra.
With all its academic tradition, it is home to the oldest University in the country (a UNESCO world heritage site), fado, the old Cathedral, the Santa Claraos Monastery, historic neighborhoods, botanical gardens...all must-see attractions.
Also not to be missed are the wonderful, typical, unique, historic villages of the region, such as Ferraria de São João, Piódão, Foz d´Égua, Talasnal, Candal, Aldeia da Pena, Cerdeira... all with a charm in their own way, also known as shale villages.
The Cerro da Candosa walkways are another unmissable attraction, where the natural landscapes provide views over the Ceira Valley and the well-known and majestic Cabril Gorge.
There are also waterfalls...and what can we say about them? Wonderful, imposing, refreshing: Fraga da Pena and Pedra da Ferida, two examples that are well worth visiting.
